RalstonFlash: Democrats surge in Clark County, blunt GOP gains for first time

Morning Score:
NEVADA EXCLUSIVE - LEAVING LAS VEGAS: Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle is targeting her state's largest city with an arresting new television ad, featuring President Barack Obama's infamous exhortation that companies shouldn't be spending money there. "Harry Reid and Barack Obama: Together they promised change," the ad begins. "Then came this." Two clips of Obama appear in quick succession, showing the president telling audiences: "Don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas. ... You can't go take a trip to Las Vegas." The narrator takes over again: "What change did that bring to Las Vegas? We now suffer heartbreaking job losses, while our state leads the nation in home foreclosures and bankruptcies." The spot, produced by the GOP firm BrabenderCox, is a variation on a statewide spot Angle's campaign unveiled yesterday, with a less Vegas-specific message: "They promised change. Now, it's our turn." Angle was 4 points ahead of Reid in a Mason-Dixon poll published this morning, leading 49 percent to 45 percent. Ralston Flash: GOP closing in on 5 percentage point edge in Clark County, but Democrats have 14,000 raw vote lead in urban Nevada

Angle campaign sends out an email detailing allegations that the Reid camp is trying to buy votes using food and gift cards--- and that the SOS (D) is allowing it.
HEADLINE: When you can't beat them, Steal it.

It's still the economy, stupid.

Harry Reid's final ad, launched over the weekend, focuses on a simple message: Reid has saved jobs and will continue to take care of Nevada; Sharron Angle's policies will cost Nevada jobs and "be the knockout punch to the economy."

Also over the weekend:

“I don’t work for the president,” Reid said in an interview. “I don’t carry his water or anybody in the administration’s water.” In the final days, Reid is really driving home his "independent" claims--- even as Obama stumped for him in Vegas on Friday.

Setting the stakes high, President Barack Obama made an impassioned plea Friday night to thousands of supporters in Las Vegas to help re-elect Harry Reid. "The main reason I'm here, the main reason I need you fired up is because in just 11 days you have the chance to set the direction of this state and this country -- not just for the next five years, for the next 10 years, but for the next several decades," Obama declared.

In a blitz of late spending, outside interest groups have in recent days poured nearly $5.2 million into television, radio and direct-mail advertising aimed at influencing Nevada voters. The expenditures between Oct. 8 and Oct. 21 bring total outside spending in Nevada's marquee U.S. Senate race to $13.5 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

The reputed Republican surge is still a ripple in Nevada's most populous county after six days of early voting, according to Clark County voter tallies. In Washoe County, Nevada's other urban center, Republicans have a nearly 7 percentage point turnout advantage. It adds up to Democrats representing 45 percent of the early turnout in the two counties and Republicans 40 percent.

-MGM Resorts Boosts Contribution to PAC Backing Reid (Bloomberg)

MGM Resorts International gave $250,000 this month to a political action committee airing ads in support of Harry Reid. It was MGM’s second donation to the Patriot Majority PAC, Federal Election Commission records show. MGM’s donation accounted for most of the $353,675 raised Oct. 1-15 by Patriot Majority.

-Reid’s endorsements make for strange bedfellows: That they've found themselves in the same camp is a testimony to the power of Reid's position as majority leader, said David Damore, a political science professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. "They all want their interests protected and who better to do it than the majority leader," he said. "There's an old adage that politics makes strange bedfellows, and that's the case here." http://www.rgj.com/article/20101024/NEWS19/10240342/Nevada-Senate-race-makes-for-strange-bedfellows-

Love-hate relationship with Washington plays out in Nevada politics:
The West has long been torn between attacking and cozying up to the federal government. Now Harry Reid and Sharron Angle have picked sides in that fight.

Interesting.

erbose Jon Ralston goes strangely quiet
Posted by Sherman Frederick

Jon Ralston and the Las Vegas Sun changed the first headline published on his column last Friday from:

"Reid lost the debate to Angle"

to ...

"Thoughts on the Reid-Angle debate".

Now, Jon's Sunday column headline was changed after publication from:

"Jon Ralston is aghast, still, at Reid’s inability to control debate"

to ...

"Will Angle win by revising history, slandering Reid?".

The Sun's and Ralston's bias for Reid couldn't get much clearer than that. Who knows how many other headlines and content are revised day-to-day to booster Reid's flagging campaign. You'd have to actually read a Ralston column all the way through to know that, and who among us willing to do that? All we really know is that you usually can't shut Jon up about anything. After getting called out on this, however, he remains strangely quiet.

Debate reviews:

T.A. Frank of The New Republic says:
If your campaign is based on portraying your opponent as loony, then why give that opponent a chance to look reasonable? Lyndon Johnson never debated Barry Goldwater. Then again, I’m no political strategist. And neither, I’ve come to see, is Harry Reid. So let’s focus on what matters now: that a debate was held in Nevada last night between Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his Republican challenger Sharron Angle. And its upshot was—sorry, folks—that Angle improved her chances.

Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, today endorsed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in his difficult re-election bid against Republican Sharron Angle.

Raggio's Endorsement here.

What does Bill Raggio's endorsement of Harry Reid mean?
Ralston: It means he may get a threat to his leader's position in 2011. It means he really doesn't like Sharron Angle. But it probably doesn't mean he got Reid a lot of votes he wouldn't already have won over. The GOP caucus for Reid already is set - publicly and privately - and that group could well sway the election. But I doubt too many folks will be swayed by Raggio's endorsement.

It also plays into Angle's theme that she is not of the Establishment, but that, too, was already known and those voters are with her already. This is all not much more than noise at this point, although I bet it was a gut-wrenching decision for Raggio. He would never have endorsed Angle but the safer move would have been to sit it out.

It is a measure of how much he dislikes Angle and how disastrous he apparently believes she would be - based on his statement.
